Who is Piyush Mehta?
A serial entrepreneur, someone who never gives up and truly has a passion for what he does! Every company I have built has been with a clear focus on deriving customer value via quality solutions. Having done this now across three tech start ups over the past 20+ years, I have learned a ton from each experience and some of the best education has been as a result of being entrenched in the toughest of situations. Most importantly I have built lifelong friendships throughout these journeys and with each passing day, these are what I cherish the most.
What’s the story behind Data Dynamics?
Data Dynamics was born 9 years ago to address the challenges of data management faced by enterprise customers. Enterprises have billions of records (unstructured data) across tens of locations with limited to no visibility about and within the content of these. As digital adoption accelerates, so does the sheer quantity of data created and needed to be stored, replicated and backed up. This leads to a daunting task of trying to manage the costs of the storage infrastructure and to do so whilst ensuring data security, compliance and governance. We at Data Dynamics have built an Software Platform that address’ exactly this challenge and in doing so provide enterprises the ability to avoid buying point solutions each time they face a challenge. Over the past 9 years we’ve had the privilege to work with some of the largest organizations globally, having deployed our Platform at 26 of the largest companies in the world.
What was the most difficult part of your experience in the early beginnings?
Challenges are synonymous to starting a company! Each turn of the page comes with unexpected challenges, those that are successful find ways to maintain calm and address the challenges with careful thought and do their best to avoid them from recurring. One such challenge for us was being a boot strapped high tech start-up. Sounds like an oxymoron in a world where entrepreneurs are proud to say they’ve raised tens of millions and done multiple rounds of fund raises. We had made a conscious decision when we started that we would focus on building a company for the long haul. One that we built as a business where profitability mattered and the bottom line was not sacrificed for pure top line growth. Building our Software Platform entailed investing millions in R&D and the time from development to sale is a long cycle. This created many a time when we had to be scrappy to meet our financial obligations and this meant many a sleepless night. We were able to persevere thru each and every time, sometimes literally by a shoestring. In retrospect, each of those situations made us more resilient and we continued to become more and more efficient as a result.
What are you most proud of regarding your business?
The over 115 strong Data Dynamics Family Members are what I am most proud of! I am honored to work along side them and I am in awe at their commitment and attention to detail that allows us to be the best that we can be across all aspects of our business.
What is your vision for the future of Data Dynamics?
Ensure every global enterprise stores their data in a manner that meets external compliance requirements, adheres to their internal governance standards, is secure and protected, whilst optimizing the underlying infrastructure in which it resides.
What’s your advice for the businesses that are trying to adapt to this economic climate?
Within chaos there is always opportunity! Challenges that seem unsurmountable create potential for unimaginable innovation. If you are facing a difficult time, look for ways to do things differently, find ideas that allow you to think beyond the conventional. Every business requires to get more tech savvy and be part of the digital revolution that is taking place. Find your innovative differentiator and take advantage of technology to create new product, get to your customers more efficiently and effectively in a profitable manner. From this pandemic came the rise of food delivery apps and virtual meeting software. Similarly people learned to use e-commerce as a primary way to shop and entertainment became synonymous with Netflix and Disney+. Focus on ‘simple’ as the simplest of ideas garner the greatest of adoption.
Please name a few technologies which have the greatest impact on your business.
Our value is a direct result of the amount of data generated. Thus everything from emails and documents to pictures and streaming videos all help create digital content that requires to be analyzed, optimized and managed. We believe this challenge gets larger and larger as everything truly turns digital and as such the digital revolution drives the greatest impact for our Software Platform.
What books do you have on your nightstand?
Amongst my favorite are Shoe Dog, The Idea Factory, The Last Lion and The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.
